According to a new study conducted in the journal Nutrition Research, dark chocolate would have beneficial effects on the blood circulation. Deformability is an important property of red blood cells: the more these cells can deform, the better the circulation and the provision of oxygen to tissues. However, studies conducted on animals but also on humans have shown that the polyphenols that contain dark chocolate promote this function, not only in the long term but also just after eating chocolate. They also have the ability to increase the production and bioavailability of nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator. Their results show that dark chocolate, but not milk chocolate, makes it possible to increase the deformability of the erythrocytes and thus improve the blood circulation and the oxygenation of the tissues. Epicatechin is also found in tea and apples.
Green tea contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which by promoting the circulation of blood in the arteries and vessels helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In a study of 42 people, the researchers gave volunteers either EGCG supplements – first a dose of 300 mg then 2 doses of 150 mg a day, or a placebo.
The researchers measured blood flow to patients two hours after the first dose and after two weeks of treatment. They found that blood flow increased by almost 8% two hours after the first dose of EGCG. The effect was confirmed after 2 weeks of treatment: the blood of volunteers who had taken EGCG was better carried in the body. In contrast, no changes in blood flow were seen in those who received the placebo.
Orange and citrus fruits in general contain hesperidin, an antioxidant flavonoid, which has a beneficial effect on dilation and resistance of blood vessels and improves blood circulation.
